Akhona Candice Ndlela

My name is Akhona Candice Ndlela. I am in my second year of university. I come from a humble home where my parents do not work, making my two older sisters the breadwinners in the family. I met the ladies in my final year of high school, graced with a wonderful first visit. I came to know that they offered to sponsor my matric year expenses. That included my school fees, data allocation, and matric ball to name a few. I was moved in tears by their kind gesture as I immediately thought of the weight taken off my sisters’ shoulders. Personally, I felt that it was more than financial assistance. I have learnt so much from the ladies. It was a sisterhood. A birth of a community of women helping other young women to realise their dreams. The youth have these dreams and plans to succeed and sometimes help along the way is just what we need, and I will forever be grateful for this kindness. The love and passion of what they do is what inspired me the most. The journey with the ladies has truly been a wonderful one, from the lessons learnt over coffee to what it means to be a young girl who aspires to be so much more than her circumstances, who strives to be the best that she can be and who in the near future wishes to share the same kindness shown her to other dreamers out there.

Levern Christiansen

My name is Levern Christiansen, and I was one of the girls who were selected to be part of the Ricka foundation in the year 2019. Being part of this foundation to me was such a blessing. My grade 12 year was so much better financially and even emotionally because where I come from, financial stress plays a huge role on one’s mental health. This foundation lifted so much weight off my mom’s shoulders and did not only help me but her as well. The lady’s part of the foundation is extremely nice and is like our second moms. I’ll forever be grateful to these ladies, and I’m looking forward to being there for other girls in the future. I’ll be sure to pay it forward. "Levern Christiansen was one of our first recipients on the programme in 2019. Levern is a goal-driven young lady and very strong academically. She is studying Midwifery at Stellenbosch University and is currently in her third year. Levern has continued to be an active part of our organization and is always available to offer advice to current recipients."

“I have often felt that we do not harness the wealth of potential that our young people have. We need to acknowledge their strengths and show them how to use it to support others. The only way we can break the chains of poverty and self-doubt is to support each other to rise above our circumstances.”
